Venlo airfield, February 1944 – September 1944 |

Up to the demise of the
airfield, three units are worthwhile to mention from an historical point
of view: the Erprobungskommando 410 (testing the Me410 as a night
fighter); the 2./JG 400 (rocket fighter Me163) and the III.KG 3 (He111
carrying V-1 Flying Bombs). Because of the allied air superiority the
operations of these units could hardly shift the balance of war. The
airfield was heavily bombed and damaged on August 15th and
September 3rd 1944. The I.NJG 1 left Venlo for
Münster-Handorf (Germany) on the September 5th. The allied
airborne landings near Son, Nijmegen and Arnhem marked the end of Venlo
airfield. Most of the installations were demolished by the Wehrmacht.
