Venlo airfield, March 1941 – July 1943 |
The
German night fighters had to defend a sector in the so called Kammhuber
line, a defence line of search lights and night fighter
bases. Since the early months of 1942, as the night fighters got the aid
of radar systems, their scores rised. On March 5th 1943 a
long series of bomb raids started in the Ruhr-area. In these months the
night fighters based in Venlo were most successful, partially because
the unit had been reinforced by experienced crews from other units.
Furthermore, the new and specially developed night fighter type Heinkel
He219 got its operational debut in Venlo. After July 1943 the units
score fell dramatically and the I.NJG 1 was confronted with a new
adversary: the American 8th Army Air Force.
