Since
the mid 19th century, a level part of the ‘Groote Heide’
(Greath Heath) east of Venlo, was used as a firing range and exercise
area for the Dutch army. When the just founded Dutch air force searched
for suitable landing strips, they built a small auxiliary airfield. The
military importance of this field was rather small because of the nearby
border with Germany. The annual air shows made aviation quite popular
with the local population. Another highlight was the passing by of the
air ship Graf Zeppelin in November 1930. During the German invasion in
May 1940 the airfield was not involved.
